It began its path in 1959 as the University College of Sussex. Two years later, a royal charter gave it the university status. Today, the University of Sussex has a strong position in world leading research with many of its activities recognised as internationally excellent. The Institute of Development Studies and The University of Sussex Business School’s Science Policy Research Unit are highly praised by the academic community.
The university has a strong focus on student employability. The Careers and Employability Centre assists in finding work placements and helps develop all professional skills valued by employers. More than 90% of the university’s graduates find work within just six months of completing their degrees. Strong links with a number of businesses and organizations come in handy to help students develop practical knowledge and find great job opportunities. Besides that, the university is partnered with other higher education institutions including National Taiwan University, Peking University and Harvard.
The diverse and aspiring student community represents more than 140 countries, which makes the University of Sussex one of the most international in the country. It is home to more than 17,000 young talents every year. Undergraduate scholarships of up to £5,000 are available to students from the UK, EU and other countries across the world. Masters scholarships are in place as well and their worth depends on the course and the country a student is from.

The university’s campus is set on an open green field in South Downs on the outskirts of Brighton. This stunning site harmoniously blends modern architecture with green spaces as well as granting easy access to the nearby South Downs National Park. The centre of the vibrant coastal resort town of Brighton is just a ten minute train ride from the campus. A survey conducted by Sodexo named Brighton the happiest city for students in England. 93% of students receiving education at the University of Sussex and its counterpart, Brighton, said that they were very happy to live and study in the city.
The university provides 5,500 rooms on and off campus. International first year students have priority in accommodation allocation. Housing options are represented by en-suite rooms and rooms with shared bathrooms, all in self-catered halls of residence.
Sussex provides pre-sessional courses lasting up to 10 weeks for those students who are required to meet English language entry requirements.
