The history of the University of Sunderland begins in 1901 when it was established as a municipal training college. In 1992, it became a university. It now owns three UK based campuses, two in Sunderland and one in London, as well as an international one in Hong Kong. The university is divided into five faculties: Health Sciences and Wellbeing; Arts and Creative Industries; Business, Law and Tourism; Education and Society; and Technology. Each faculty features a great number of courses with International Tourism and Hospitality Management, Social Sciences, Education Studies, Psychology and Sports Coaching being the highest-rated according to the 2018 National Student Survey.

The university takes pride in its links with a multitude of businesses, organizations and companies, especially in the high-tech, engineering and media industries. This provides ample opportunities for students to take work placements as part of their degree.

The university is home to more than 20,000 students who represent over a hundred countries. It supports its international community through bursaries and scholarships. An international scholarship for undergraduates deducts £1,500 from tuition fees and postgraduates are able to reduce the cost by £1,000.
