The progenitor of the University of Plymouth, the Plymouth School of Navigation, was opened in 1862. The institution obtained the formal status of the university in 1992, and now it is one of the top-rated young universities in the UK (according to THE Young University Rankings). The university boasts a range of other prestigious awards including The Queen’s Anniversary Prize for marine and maritime research and education. Eleven of its subjects are in the top ten for student satisfaction.
The university welcomes more than 26,000 students yearly, and it’s the 15th largest UK university by a number of students. More than 3,000 students come from abroad representing 130+ nationalities. One of the reasons they choose the university is its outstanding Careers and Employability Hub. It provides career advice, helps with CV writing, and aids with finding work placement and developing skills in a real workplace environment. Yearly, 12,000 students utilize the Hub’s services.
The University of Plymouth has invested more than £155 million in its facilities. The Marine Building is equipped with wave tanks, ship simulators, research vessels, and a diving centre. The university’s ocean engineering research is recognized on the global scene, with the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects placing it eleventh in this category. The list of subjects ranked highly on the national level includes Civil Engineering, Computer Science, and Design, as well as Geography and Environmental Science.
The university provides Undergraduate International Student Scholarships worth £2,000 and Academic Excellence Scholarship taking 50% off tuition fees.

The history of Plymouth, the largest city in the southwest of England, inextricably linked with the sea. Previously known as a port and shipbuilding centre, it now hosts one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe. The university’s campus is located in the centre of Plymouth dotted with restaurants, bars, clubs, shops, etc. Local beaches ensuring lots of watersports activities are a short ride from the campus.
The university guarantees accommodation to undergraduate students provided they apply before the deadlines. University-owned halls of residence are located 20 minutes away from the campus and the city centre. All rooms are for single occupancy. Students can also use private accommodation options in Plymouth.
