The roots of the University of Manchester go back to 1824 when the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) was founded. In 2004, UMIST merged with the Victoria University of Manchester to form the current version of The University of Manchester. To date, the institution is the largest single site university in the UK. Its four faculties (Medical and Human Sciences; Engineering and Physical Sciences; Humanities and Life Sciences) offer more courses than any other university in Great Britain.
The university attracts almost 40,000 students every year and together they represent more than 154 countries. The list of renowned alumni and teaching staff includes 25 Nobel Prize laureates. Some of the highest standards of teaching are confirmed by the Silver Award in the Teaching Excellence Framework. The University of Manchester also has a strong position as a research institution. It is a member of the Russell Group of the research-led institution. The Academic Ranking of World Universities put in the sixth in the UK and within the top 40 globally in 2017.
The university established a number of scholarships for international students including 30 Equity and Merit scholarships for master’s students, Global Futures Scholarships totalling £300,000, and GREAT scholarships worth from £10,000 to £14,625.

Although the facilities of the University of Manchester are referred to as a‘campus’, it is not a campus university by nature. The university buildings are integrated into the city’s infrastructure. This provides an excellent opportunity to explore Manchester and everything it has to offer.
The university is proud of its health facilities featuring world class medical staff and state of the art equipment. All healthcare fees are covered in full measure by the National Health Service for full time students.
The university provides a place to live for all students in their first year of study. Overall, it has 20 halls of residence ensuring 8,000 rooms. The housing options range from shared bathroom flats, en-suite rooms, catered and self-catered buildings as well as family flats and single-sex halls.
